The text

Learning gardening after work

A woman who has always loved plants joins a free technical gardening course that she follows in the evening and on Saturdays. She enjoys her lively, supportive class, where learners share advice, and she already helps friends and family with their gardens. Gardening is a fun escape from her job, which is often depressing.

III. Writing (5 marks)

Writing · Article: using the Internet to learn

5 marks

Your classmates think the Internet is only for playing games: write an 8-line article for the school magazine advising them how to use it as a tool for learning and improving their studies.

Answer elements · عناصر الإجابة
  • Layout: a short title, an opening sentence answering the classmates' idea, 3–4 pieces of advice, a conclusion; about 8 lines, no name, no school.
  • Ideas: educational websites and videos to revise lessons; online dictionaries and encyclopaedias for homework; e-books; online exercises and quizzes; sharing notes with classmates; limiting game time; checking the reliability of sources.
  • Language: advice (you should / ought to / why don't you…?, it's a good idea to…), warning (Mind fake information! Look out!), linkers (first, also, moreover, however, finally).
  • Model: The Internet: More Than a Game. Many of you think the Internet is only for playing games, but it can be your best teacher. First, you should watch educational videos to understand difficult lessons again. You can also use online dictionaries to look up new words and do your homework. Moreover, there are many websites with free exercises and quizzes to test yourself before exams. Why don't you create an online group to share notes with your classmates? However, mind fake information and always check your sources. Finally, play less and learn more: the Internet will help you succeed!
